Nemo Sewing, Ltd

Nemo Sewing Factory, established in 1971, is a high-end fashion and classic garment manufacturer specializing in coats, raincoats, and jeans wear. With a team of 160 employees, the factory has an annual production capacity of 240,000 items and exports 80% of its products to Scandinavia. The company provides full-service manufacturing, including model design, pattern development, production, quality control, and delivery.

Integration Process and Support for Refugees
Nemo Sewing Factory collaborates closely with the State Employment Agency of Latvia to support Ukrainian refugees. Both the factory and the agency actively advertised job vacancies via Facebook and Telegram, while the agency also provided assistance regarding legalization requirements. Refugees were able to access job training programs funded by the EU to help integrate into the Latvian job market.

Helpful Aspects and Challenges in Integration
Nemo Sewing Factory found it beneficial to receive EU funding through the “Education at Employer” program, which covered the first three months of job training for Ukrainian refugees. However, the integration process faced challenges, including Latvia’s focus on finding housing rather than prioritizing employment. Many refugees were placed in rural areas, making it difficult to find jobs. The factory offered housing and school enrollment for children, but only 10 Ukrainians applied, with only two having relevant sewing skills.

Lessons Learned and Takeaways
The key takeaway from the integration process is that employment should be the primary focus of refugee support. If refugees cannot earn a salary, they are more likely to return to Ukraine or seek better opportunities in other countries like Poland or Germany. Nemo Sewing Factory sees employment as the first priority for successful integration, with housing and other services following once stable employment is secured.
